Packers: 3 players who won’t be on the roster by September 1
2. Jonathan Garvin
Garvin played in 16 regular season games as a second-year pro for the Packers last season. He’s flashed some ability to rush the passer from his outside linebacker spot but the fact that he’s coming into the preseason as the projected third option at the left outside linebacker spot means he’s on the outside of the roster bubble looking in as camp begins.
Randy Ramsey is going to be the obstacle standing between Garvin and a spot on the Week 1 active roster. The big advantage he possesses over Garvin is that he’s a core special teams piece for a franchise that really values that aspect of the game.
Garvin can help on special teams but that’s not his specialty. He needs to prove he can earn meaningful snaps as a pass rusher on the edge if he’s going to start the year on the active roster.
The good news for Garvin is that he’s got the sort of size and athleticism teams covet for his position. If Green Bay cuts him loose, he’ll have every opportunity to catch on somewhere else. At the very least, he should feel comfortable that the worst outcome for him leaving training camp is that he’ll start the year on someone’s practice squad.
