The Boston Red Sox have not looked great since returning from the MLB All-Star break. Here are three players they could sell high on at the trade deadline if that is what they choose to do.

The Boston Red Sox did not have the greatest entrance into the MLB All-Star break, as they lost their last two games of the first half to the New York Yankees by the score of 27-3. Surely, the extra time would be just what the Red Sox needed to bounce back and continue their climb up the AL Wild Card standings, right?

Instead, their first game back was nearly historically disastrous. They were blown out by the score of 28-5 to the rival Toronto Blue Jays. Those runs allowed were just two runs shy of the major league record of 30 set by the 2007 Texas Rangers. If you thought that was bad, the Red Sox watched as the Blue Jays hit an inside-the-park grand slam. That’s how terrible things went in Boston on Friday night.

Then, Boston receives the news that star third baseman Rafael Devers is hitting the injured list due to right hamstring inflammation.

The MLB trade deadline takes place on Aug. 2. Boston has to decide whether they need to buy or sell. As things look right now, selling looks like the option for the Red Sox. If they are to sell, here is who could command the most value.

3. J.D. Martinez

When it comes to the trade deadline, All-Stars will garner attention. Not only that, but with there being a universal designated hitter across both leagues, teams are going to look to add power bats to their lineups for what they hope are lengthy postseason runs.

Nelson Cruz and Josh Bell of the Washington Nationals are two names that have been brought up as potential trade targets. If the Red Sox want to sell, J.D. Martinez could command some attention.

Martinez is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. Through 81 games, Martinez is slashing .302/.368/.481 while recording nine home runs, 38 RBI, 51 runs scored, and 96 hits.

If the Red Sox truly feel like there is no chance of them making it to the postseason, then they need to look at players who are entering free agency that have star power. Martinez fits the bill.
