Justyn Ross injury: Promising Chiefs rookie’s season is over before it even began

Chiefs rookie Justyn Ross was put on injured reserve after undergoing foot surgery, ending his 2022 season before training camp.

Justyn Ross cannot catch a break on the injury front.

His football career was already threatened by a health condition in college at Clemson though he ultimately worked his way back against the odds.

Now his rookie season in the NFL has been taken from him because of a foot injury.

With the start of training camp looming, the Chiefs placed Ross on injured reserve. He will not play in 2022.

This development is a bummer for Kansas City after Ross impressed during minicamp. The departures of Tyreek Hill and others in the wide receiver room, the Chiefs might have hit gold getting Ross as an undrafted free agent. Now he won’t be available to prove if that was the case.

Ross injured his foot in November while playing for Clemson and had surgery to repair the damage. This latest setback was because another surgery was necessary to clean up the injury.

When he was a freshman in college, Ross looked like the next big thing with 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns on 46 catches. He had a bit of a sophomore slump in 2019 then was hit with the devastating news that he had a congenital spinal condition that required surgery if he was ever going to be able to play again.

The receiver was able to make it back in 2021, leading the Tigers with 524 yards on 47 receptions.

With lowered productivity and his injury history, Ross went undrafted.

He came back from a season-ending issue once. He’ll have to do it again with an eye on breaking through in 2023.
