Eventually, Jacob deGrom will make his triumphant return to the New York Mets rotation.

Although he has not pitched at the big-league level in over a year now, New York Mets fans need to anticipate Jacob deGrom’s return to the starting rotation here shortly.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the two-time NL Cy Young award winner will be heading to Triple-A Syracuse for another rehab start on Wednesday. As he works his way back from a scapula injury that has kept him off the big-league club’s roster all season long, New York remains in a tight divisional race with the hated Atlanta Braves. His return can help keep the Braves in second place.

While there is optimism regarding deGrom’s eventual return, we will be believe it when we see it.

New York Mets: Jacob deGrom to make rehab start at Triple-A on Wednesday

With the Mets idle on Monday night, New York picked up half a game on the Braves who blew a golden opportunity late on the road at the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets currently have the second best record in the Senior Circuit at 59-37 on the season. While winning the division is critical, it is even more paramount to be a top-two seed in the NL when the postseason arrives.

Although getting deGrom back could be huge for the Mets’ potential pennant push, keep in mind that he has not made more than 15 starts in the last three seasons. While his ERA remained forever blistering in the 2020 COVID-shortened season and in half a campaign last year, durability has not exactly been his cup of tea of late. This is why Mets fans are only slightly optimistic here.

Ultimately, New York is on a shortlist of teams who can realistically win the World Series. Though anything short of an NLCS berth would be seen as a gross disappointment, this team needs to make the postseason more than anything. Barring a catastrophic collapse, the Mets should have this in the bag. However, they blew a massive lead to Atlanta a year ago and missed out entirely…

If deGrom’s rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse goes well, he could be returning the rotation soon.
