Trey Mancini approaching Orioles homestand like it’s his last
By Rylie Smith
Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini doesn’t seem to believe his career in Baltimore will last longer than this season.
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini expressed to Mark Viviano of WJZ-TV Baltimore that he’s “approaching his next four games as his last” with the Orioles in anticipation of being traded.
Mancini has played with the Orioles his entire career. He made his MLB debut in 2016. According to MLB Trade Rumors, he may be traded to the New York Mets.
Orioles: Trey Mancini may be traded to the New York Mets
The Mets are reportedly looking for designated hitter upgrades, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Per Andy Martino of SNY, New York is in on Mancini.
According to FanGraphs, the Mets have playoff odds of 99.7 percent. They’re an extremely successful team this season and have good strategy.
Among all MLB teams this season, they have the seventh-best batting average (.252) and sixth-best on-base percentage (.324). Their power, however, seems to be average. They have the 15th-best slugging percentage (.395) and 13th-best OPS (.718).
Mancini wouldn’t offer much of an increase in power. If he joins the Mets, he’d have the seventh-best isolated power (.136) on the team and the sixth-best slugging percentage (.404). He hits well and wouldn’t harm the team’s success, but he wouldn’t necessarily improve it either.
Mancini is currently hitting .268/.345/.404 for an OPS of .749. The Orioles aren’t doing nearly as well as the Mets are. They have the seventh-worst batting average (.235) and OBP (.303). They have the eighth-worst OPS (.690) and rank 17th in slugging percentage (.387).
Mancini, however, falls around average with the Orioles too. The Orioles have extremely low playoff odds (2.1 percent, according to FanGraphs), so trading away their average players this season may be a smart move. He’d be a better fit with the Mets.
