Cardinals: Juan Soto trade talks start with promising big-leaguer
By Scott Rogust
The St. Louis Cardinals will reportedly have to include one of their young major league players in a Juan Soto trade.
The MLB trade deadline is less than a week away, with the biggest name being dangled in talks is Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto. There was a reported list of names contacting the Nationals about Soto, one of them being the St. Louis Cardinals. But what would they have to give up?
According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, both teams have had trade talks that includes Cardinals second baseman Nolan Gorman and “a rejoinder from the Nationals that includes starting pitcher Patrick Corbin” as a way to shed salary.

In regards to including Corbin in a Soto trade, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo appeared on “The Sports Junkies” show on 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C. on July 27 and said that they do not plan on including a big contract in a potential trade of their star outfielder.

Gorman was long viewed as one of the Cardinals’ top prospects, ranking No. 1 in the team’s pipeline entering the 2021 season. This past May, Gorman received his call-up to the majors after the team shifted Tommy Edman to shortstop after demoting Paul DeJong.
This season, Gorman is slashing .223/.299/.411 while recording nine home runs, 22 RBI, 26 runs scored, and 39 hits.
Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported this past weekend that rival executives believe that the Cardinals are the favorites to land Soto. That, and the two write in their article that the Nationals like the Cardinals’ young players and prospects.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Nationals were looking for four-to-five young players in return for Soto. That number of players is a combination of prospects and major leaguers with low service time.
The trade deadline takes place on Aug. 2, and fans will be eagerly waiting to see if Washington will move on from Soto.
