Red Sox rumors: Christian Vazquez should get traded to the Astros

The Houston Astros didn’t get much at all offensively from their catching duo of Martin Maldonado and Jason Castro this year. Castro has been hurt while Maldonado continues to have a good working relationship with the pitchers—on both sides actually. He has hit for some decent power this year but has been far too easy of an out. Do the Astros go big and look to add Willson Contreras or call up the Red Sox and acquire someone who might better fit their philosophy?

Christian Vazquez is a free agent after this season and certainly someone that blends will offensively and defensively. He won’t hit baseballs like Contreras can. He will, however, call a good game. He is a far better hitter than any catcher the Astros currently have. At a lower cost than Contreras, he makes a lot of sense for Houston.

Only recently have Red Sox rumors done a 180-degree turn and gone from looking at what the team could add to what they will sell. There hasn’t been much discussed about Vazquez. Unfortunately for the Chicago Cubs, Boston might create a little bit of chaos. The demand for catchers right now isn’t all that great. Aside from the Astros, the Mets and San Francisco Giants might be the teams most inclined to trade for a catcher. The situation is at its worst in San Francisco with them completely out of a playoff spot at the moment.

If Vazquez ends up anywhere, the Astros, who don’t quite need that huge of an offensive boost, make a lot of sense.
