Luis Castillo was the best pitcher on the trade block and the Seattle Mariners ended up beating out the likes of the Yankees and the Dodgers for him.

Any team in need of starting pitching, particularly those with a hefty number of quality prospects in their farm system, were eyeing Luis Castillo in a potential trade with the Cincinnati Reds. While there were huge teams in the mix, it was the Seattle Mariners that struck gold.

On Friday night, Seattle pulled off the trade for Castillo, giving their young pitching staff a massive boost as they attempt to maintain their position as an AL Wild Card team and try to make a move up in the AL West standings.

Jeff Passan of ESPN was first on the report of the trade.

It’s no wonder that the Reds were willing to bite on this trade with the Mariners with the haul they’re getting in return.

Seattle was widely believed to have one of the better farm systems in baseball and they’re sending three of their Top 5 prospects to Cincinnati in the trade. That’s a massive haul, but one that shows just how seriously that the Mariners were about getting the trade done for the starting pitcher.

Meanwhile, Seattle was considered a dark horse lurking for a potential Juan Soto trade, but that seems highly unlikely now that three of their best prospects are now members of the Reds organization.
