Mega Millions Lottery: The Islanders make a big move to win $1.28 billion jackpot
By Scott Rogust
The New York Islanders are looking to win the Mega Millions jackpot but not for themselves. They want to win it for others.
The Mega Millions Lottery jackpot continues to grow. Ahead of the latest drawing, the jackpot is now up to a lucrative $1.28 billion. As it turns out, there is a professional sports franchise that is looking to win the lottery drawing.
There were 25,000 Mega Millions lottery tickets purchased by the NHL’s New York Islanders, but they are not looking to win it for themselves. Rather, if they were to win, they would give them to season ticket holders, suite holders, staff, and to the Islanders Children’s Foundation.
“As we prepare for our historic 50th anniversary season, we want to show our appreciation for our Islanders Season Ticket Members and staff and give them a chance to participate in this massive Mega Millions drawing,” said Islanders Co-Owner Jon Ledecky, h/t the team’s official website. “Revenue from lottery tickets is dedicated to education in New York State, so no matter what happens in today’s historic drawing, important funds have been generated for education in the state, which supports our fan base and their families.”
The team says they will “distribute net winnings among the Islanders Group.” But if they are to win below $250,000, they will donate it all to the Islanders Children’s Foundation.
This is the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot ever, with the highest being $1.586 billion back in 2016.
