Seattle Mariners rookie Julio Rodriguez left the team’s game against the Houston Astros after taking a pitch to his wrist.
Things just appeared to be looking up for the Seattle Mariners. On late Friday night, the team was able to acquire Luis Castillo, one of the top starting pitchers available at the trade deadline, from the Cincinnati Reds. The Mariners were all-in on making a run to the postseason.
But during the Mariners’ July 30 game against the rival Houston Astros, fans received quite a scare.
In the top of the eighth inning, Rodriguez swung at a pitch thrown by Rafael Montero, but was hit right in the wrist. It was a strike three call, but Rodriguez looked to be in serious pain as he held onto his right hand.

Julio Rodriguez hit in wrist by pitch
Despite the scare, Rodriguez did remain in the game, taking center field. But in the top of the ninth inning, where he was replaced by pinch-hitter Abraham Toro.
This season, Rodriguez is slashing .271/.334/.482 while recording 18 home runs, 57 RBI, and 99 hits.
As for the Mariners, they were trailing 4-3 entering the ninth inning, but they were able to take the 5-4 lead thanks to Toro, as he hit a single to right field, allowing Jesse Winker and Adam Frazier to score.
Paul Sewald secured the 5-4 victory after forcing a lineout by Jose Altuve, a pop out by Yuli Gurriel, and a groundout by Yordan Alvarez.
Obviously, Rodriguez’s status will be worth monitoring after the game. It will remain to be seen if Rodriguez will have to miss any time, or if he will be able to play.
UPDATE (7/31): Mariners manager Scott Servais announced that Rodriguez will be going on the injured list, saying that x-rays were negative and his wrist was sore. Rodriguez will not be able to be able to have a bat in his hand for the next five days at minimum.
