The New York Yankees have been the subject of MLB rumors connecting them to Luis Castillo but reluctance to trade one player cost them that chance.
Luis Castillo would have been a nice addition to the New York Yankees. There were plenty of MLB rumors involving New York until he was finally traded by the Cincinnati Reds to the Seattle Mariners.
Where did it all go wrong for the team that seems to always get what they want?
The asking price for Castillo was high and one the Yankees definitely had the cash for. But maybe they weren’t so interested in depleting their savings account to land this particular player. Instead, they’ll have to look elsewhere because they apparently didn’t have a willingness to go as far as the Mariners did. Maybe there is a store brand version of Castillo out there for them.
MLB rumors: Why Luis Castillo isn’t pitching for the Yankees
Castillo was a popular man. According to Mark Feinsand, a dozen teams made their bids for him. Unfortunately, the Yankees were only “close” with what they were willing to send to Cincinnati.
A dozen teams made their bid for Luis Castillo, per sources, but Seattle’s package was the best. The Yankees were “close,” according to someone familiar with the talks, but the Mariners’ offer won out in the end.

It was no secret how much the Yankees preferred to hold onto top prospect Anthony Volpe. Their reluctance to part with him might have signed the death warrant in acquiring Castillo. We almost can’t blame them. They have been steadfast in anointing him the future shortstop already.
According to Joel Sherman, the Reds preferred the trade package the Mariners were offering as opposed to a Yankees trade centered on Oswald Peraza.
The Yankees told the Reds from the outset of talks on Castillo that they would not include Anthony Volpe. A deal built around Oswald Peraza was not going to match in Cincy’s view what it ultimately received from the Mariners.

Yankees fans won’t be surprised by these after-the-fact MLB rumors that show exactly why Castillo won’t be cutting his hair, shaving daily, and calling the Bronx home. With Isaiah Kiner-Falefa viewed as the temporary solution at the shortstop position, we probably won’t see the team change the plan to move forward with Volpe.
What might make things tough for New York is finding a different available pitcher that won’t cost them Volpe. Jose Quintana is one direction they can go. Frankie Montas, though, would probably require a package similar to what the Mariners gave up for Castillo.
The trade deadline is approaching quickly and the Yankees should continue to push hard to add to their rotation. Expect more MLB rumors connecting to arms. Prepare for some more disappointment, too.
