MLB rumors: 3 small-market teams take a swing at Joey Gallo
By Mark Powell
New York Yankees outfielder Joey Gallo has been a disappointment in the Bronx. As both sides move on, three teams are interested.
Gallo is just the latest example of a player who wasn’t cut out for New York City.
Baseball fans in the Big Apple provide an immense amount of pressure. For Gallo, the face of the three outcomes era, it was always bound to end in disaster.
“Every time I see a Yankees hat, every time I see a Yankees jersey, it’s something I’m going to have to understand,” Gallo said at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. “I didn’t play well as a Yankee. I wish I had.”
By all accounts, Gallo is a very nice person who gives it his all on the diamond. However, by the end of his tenure with the Yankees, a strikeout was just about the only true outcome he could count on.
MLB rumors: 3 small-market teams interested in Joey Gallo
Gallo’s numbers speak for themselves — they’re bad. Like, really bad. The 28-year-old is slashing .159/.282/.339. He rarely, if ever, reaches base. When he does, he’s a fine base-runner, just as he is a capable defender. But those attributes only go so far.
Bob Nightengale reported that the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays are interested in Gallo. Jon Heyman added a new team to the mix — the Milwaukee Brewers — which also desire the opportunity to give Gallo a fresh start.
Taking a swing on Gallo at his juncture is nothing more than a shot in the dark. With Texas, Gallo was flawed but remained an All-Star caliber hitter. It wasn’t until he got to the Bronx that his approached was magnified on a national stage.
Perhaps, with the right tutelage, Gallo can regain his power stroke and reach base more often than not.
