Shohei Ohtani rumors: Guessing the Padres trade package
By Tim Boyle
The Shohei Ohtani rumors come to a close but the San Diego Padres did make a strong offer for him.
Put the Shohei Ohtani rumors to bed. Jon Heyman of the NY Post has reported that the Los Angeles Angels superstar is staying put. According to him, only three teams even made a serious offer. The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox were two of them. The other was the San Diego Padres.
The Padres have been in on everyone this MLB trade deadline season. Shohei Ohtani rumors have often included them. Even talks of them landing Juan Soto have been speculated about.
The Padres did manage to pick up Milwaukee Brewers reliever Josh Hader on Monday for their closer, Taylor Rogers, plus three other players. Ohtani would obviously cost a whole lot more. What kind of serious offer do we think they may have made?
Shohei Ohtani rumors: Guessing what the Padres had to offer
The Padres are involved in a lot of the MLB trade deadline speculation because they have young players at the major-league level, a surplus of pitching, and some highly-regarded farmhands. One would have to think they could and would trade a mix of each for a player like Ohtani. This could be the kind of deal they offered the Angels.
The three other players would have been James Wood, Reiss Knehr, and Dinelson Lamet.
It’s fair to say this would have been close to getting it done. They ended up dealing Dinelson Lamet away in the Hader trade so it’s easy to see them packaging him with these other players.
This deal does differ from the more monstrous trade package that would have swapped out James Wood for Luis Campusano and also include Joshua Mears. It’s fair to believe that even if the Padres did try to make the Shohei Ohtani rumors come true with that arguably better package of players, the Angels would have still held onto Ohtani.
There were only a few days for the Angels to strike a deal headlined by Ohtani before the trade deadline passed. The more parts the Padres deal away between now and the offseason, the less likely it is he will ever end up playing for them.
Other teams, even those who didn’t make a legitimate offer, might just be waiting to strike.
