Trey Mancini trade details: Astros land outfield help in a big way
The Houston Astros have traded for Baltimore Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini, who will immediately slot into the middle of their lineup.
While the trade initially looked like a deal involving Mancini going one way and pitching prospects going the other, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic revealed it was actually a three-team affair.
The Orioles, Astros and Tampa Bay Rays came together to get the deal done apparently.
Mancini was a questionable trade prospect, if only because teams didn’t know if the Baltimore Orioles were going to be buyers or sellers.
However, after a front-office debate, the Orioles opted to trade away Mancini since he’s in the final year of his contract.

Rosenthal tweeted that the Astros are getting Mancini from the Orioles and pitcher Jayden Murray from the Rays. The Rays are getting outfielder Jose Siri from Houston. Baltimore is getting pitcher Seth Johnson, who is about to undergo Tommy John surgery, from Tampa.
Jeff Passan named Astros prospect Chayce McDermott as the final piece of the puzzle for Baltimore.
Mancini will give Houston positional versatility, with extensive experience at first base and in the outfield.
Baltimore will now move forward with a rebuild just three games out of the AL Wildcard spots. Despite his upcoming surgery, Johnson was the No. 6 prospect for the Rays. McDermott ranked No. 12 among Astros prospeccts.
In the weeks leading up to the trade, O’s fans let their objections be known on the subject. He has been with the organization since 2013. He made his major league debut for the team in 2016 and then beat cancer in 2020 before returning as the AL Comeback Player of the Year in 2021.
Mancini is slashing .268/.347/.404 on the season. His final at-bat for the Orioles at Camden Yards was an inside-the-park home run, so he gave them something to remember him by.
With the Orioles playing in Arlington on Monday, Mancini was seen by reporters saying his goodbyes on the field.
