White Sox gift Red Sox a Christian Vazquez replacement for bullpen help

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox completed a trade that included catcher Reese McGuire and reliever Jake Diekman.

The Boston Red Sox are very active this Monday, where they appear to be buying and selling this MLB trade deadline. Boston had a void at catcher after they dealt Christian Vazquez to the Houston Astros. It did not take long to find a replacement.

According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN, the Chicago White Sox were trading catcher Reese McGuire to the Red Sox.

FanSided’s own MLB insider Robert Murray later reported that the Red Sox were sending relief pitcher Jake Diekman to the White Sox.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com also noted that Boston was are receiving a player to be named later.

Following Boston’s trade of Vazquez, they only had one active catcher on their depth chart, and that was Kevin Plawecki. Instead of calling up a player from the minor leagues, they will be bringing in McGuire.

This season, McGuire is slashing .225/.261/.285 while recording 10 RBI, 12 runs scored, and 34 hits in 53 games with Chicago.

Vazquez was set to become a free agent at the end of this season. Meanwhile, McGuire has three years of arbitration remaining, and does not become a free agent until the end of the 2025 campaign.

Meanwhile, Chicago gets to add another left-handed arm in their bullpen in the form of Diekman, who had just joined Boston this season. In 44 games with the Red Sox this season, Diekman recorded a 4.23 ERA, a 1.487 WHIP, a 5-1 win-loss record, 51 strikeouts and 30 walks over 38.1 innings.

This was not the only move that Boston made, as of this writing. They also acquired outfielder Tommy Pham from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for a player to be named later.
