2. The Mets failed to add Willson Contreras at the trade deadline

All we had heard leading up to the trade deadline was that the Chicago Cubs were looking to trade Willson Contreras, Ian Happ, and their trio of relievers. As it turns out, the Cubs may have overplayed their hand.

While Happ was never rumored to be on the New York Mets shortlist (especially after the team acquired Tyler Naquin), adding Contreras for the remainder of the 2022 season definitely would’ve bolstered the Mets lineup.

Contreras would be an immediate upgrade over Tomas Nido and could always act as the Mets DH once James McCann returns from the IL. As it stands now, New York will press forward with Nido and Patrick Mazeika.

Maybe the Cubs’ asking price was too high. Maybe they were trying to attach Happ and/ or one of the relievers as a package deal in order to get a better return. Or maybe the Mets jut feel confident with what they have behind the plate.

No team is going to compete with the Mets on the mound. If healthy, they have two of the best starting pitchers in the game. But can New York score enough runs? The team fell short in Jacob deGrom’s return last night, and that has to be a concern going forward.
