3. The Mets didn’t do enough to help Edwin Diaz and the bullpen

Mychal Givens was a last-minute trade on the part of the New York Mets, otherwise it looked as though the team were going to walk away from the deadline without addressing a huge area of concern.

You’re not going to see Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, and Carlos Carrasco out there tossing complete games over the next two months. The starting rotation is fantastic, but the bullpen is suspect.

Edwin Diaz is the best closer in baseball, but he’s usually limited to just one inning at the end of the game. Givens brings a little help to the Mets bullpen with a 2.66 ERA and 29.7% strikeout-rate. But the former Colorado Rockies have seen a lot of free passes this season, as evidenced by his 1.254 WHIP.

The Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers have the best two bullpens in the National League and both got better at the deadline. The Braves traded for Raisel Iglesias and the Dodgers landed Chris Martin.

Did New York do enough at the trade deadline to put them in line for the NL East Division crown and perhaps win the National League pennant? So long as the Mets remain healthy, they still have a good chance. But the injury bug has bitten early and often this season. Fans will collectively be holding their breath throughout the rest of the 2022 season.
