Yankees: 3 stats prove Aaron Boone can’t trust Gerrit Cole in October

Gerrit Cole’s struggles as the season goes could leave Yankee skipper Aaron Boone in a tough spot come October.

The Yankees Gerrit Cole is not only the Yankees ace, he’s generally considered one of the best pitchers of this generation.

Cole was so good that he even managed to accumulate a 59-42 record over five years with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle of last decade.

That was five years ago though, and after two seasons in Houston, where dominated the American League, Cole’s time in New York could be trending in the wrong direction in year three with the Bronx Bombers.

The Yankees are headed to the postseason with an offensive juggernaut that terrorizes opposing pitchers and fan bases alike, but the question remains if Aaron Boone is able to trust Cole come October.

Gerrit Cole has been roughed up by low-tier opponents lately

After registering a 2.73 ERA in June, that number has ballooned to 4.70 in seven July and August starts covering 44 innings pitched in which Cole gave up 23 earned runs, 9 home runs and walked 10.

Those seven outings included starts against Cleveland, Boston (2), Cincinnati, Baltimore, Kansas City and Seattle, and with the exception of perhaps the Mariners, not exactly teams the Yankees are likely to meet in the postseason.

If Cole is struggling against these teams, what will happen in October when the Astros, Blue Jays or White Sox are the opponents?
