Yankees: 3 stats prove Aaron Boone can’t trust Gerrit Cole in October
Gerrit Cole’s road numbers aren’t favorable for the Yankees
The Yankees are likely headed for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, a tremendous advantage for the New Yorkers. As the ace, Cole is likely to face at least one start in a visiting ballpark though and the right-hander has struggled away from Yankee Stadium this season.
His 5-1 road record belies the underlying numbers of a 4.28 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 24 walks in 10 road starts in which he lasted only a total of 54.2 innings. Simply put, the Yankees have bashed their way to covering for Cole’s road woes.
In his last two road starts the Red Sox got him for five earned runs, including two bombs in six innings on July 7 and the Orioles tallied 9 hits and 3 runs in six innings, tagging Cole with the loss on July 23.
In addition, in the playoffs where fast starts can be game and season-enders, Cole has struggled early, accumulating a 4.36 ERA in the first three innings this season, including a 5.32 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in first innings.
Cole will be 32 next month and it’s fair to wonder if his best postseasons are behind him.
