Matt Carpenter returned to St. Louis as a member of the New York Yankees, and received a standing ovation from Cardinals fans.

One of the league’s better stories is the resurgence of Matt Carpenter. After spending the majority of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, he signed on with the New York Yankees and has flourished in a short amount of time. But this weekend, he made his return to St. Louis.

Prior to the game on Friday, Carpenter was overcome with emotion when discussing telling his family that they were returning to St. Louis. Carpenter was batting third in the Yankees’ lineup, and as he stepped into the batter’s box, the Cardinals fans gave him a standing ovation.

Carpenter tipped his helmet to the fans before making his return to home plate. In his first at-bat as a visiting member at Busch Stadium, Carpenter drilled a single to right field to advance D..J. Lemahieu, who was standing on first base, to third.

In his 11 seasons with the Cardinals, Carpenter won a World Series title, earned the Silver Slugger award in 2013, and was elected to the All-Star Game three times (2013-14, 2016).

Overall, Carpenter recorded a .262 batting average, a .368 on-base percentage, a .449 slugging percentage, 155 home runs, 576 RBI, 752 runs scored, and 1,153 hits.

With the Yankees this season, Carpenter recorded a .322 batting average, a 1.226 OPS, 15 home runs, 36 RBI, and 37 hits through 43 games (prior to Friday game).

Carpenter made his return to St. Louis, and the team that cheered for him for 11 seasons greeted him with open arms while wearing a Yankee uniform.
