5 low-key MLB trades that could have a huge impact
2. Important under-the-radar MLB trades: Brandon Drury to the Padres
Obviously, the San Diego Padres emerged as the biggest winners at the trade deadline. Adding Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Josh Hader to the squad that is trying to topple the Dodgers in the NL West is huge, especially when you consider that Fernando Tatis Jr. is still set to return to the club later this season.
But amid all of the commotion about those blockbuster deals, the Padres also snuck in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds in which they landed infielder Brandon Drury for minor leaguer Victor Acosta.
Sure, Drury isn’t a star in the same vein as their other three major trade deadline additions. However, he’s a valuable bat and relatively versatile defensive piece that makes San Diego even more dangerous. He was slashing .274/.335/.520with 20 home runs and 59 RBI with the Reds before the trade and already has a grand slam and six RBI with the Padres in four games.
What makes Drury so invaluable for the Padres is that he’s yet another bat that opposing pitchers can’t mess around with. He can take anyone deep or make them pay, which is especially important if Soto, Manny Machado, Bell, Jake Cronenworth and eventually Tatis do their jobs and get on base. That’s a lethal combo and Drury is the icing on the cake to make this lineup a nightmare for any team that faces them.
