Brent Venables hasn’t coached a game for Oklahoma football yet but one Sooners message board post is already preparing to fire the head coach.
A tumultuous offseason for Oklahoma football with the unceremonious departure of Lincoln Riley eventually led to bringing Brent Venables home to Norman after his longstanding stint at Clemson as the defensive coordinator.
The Sooners have picked up the pieces well in terms of the roster despite a mass exodus of transfers and recruiting commits since Venables arrived, which is certainly to his credit. However, the resignation and controversy around Cale Gundy that arose this week has some fans a bit concerned about Venables as the head coach.
Perhaps a little too concerned.
Oklahoma football: Brent Venables already on the hot seat according to one message board poster
One message board poster on Sooner Scoop is already wondering what Venables’ buyout is, surmising that the Sooners could need to know that at the end of the season. Reading between the lines from this fan, Brent Venables is already on the hot seat.

While there still could be more information forthcoming regarding the Gundy situation, this feels like it might be a slight overreaction considering that we don’t have all of the details from Oklahoma about the controversy and, you know, that Venables has yet to coach a regular season game at the helm of the program.
And for the record, we don’t officially know what the buyout is for Venables. But it does feel safe to say that won’t be coming into question at any point. It’s his first season with Oklahoma football in this role and things would have to get much, much worse on the field and off it for that to come into play, no matter what a message board poster may think.
