Cubs: 3 players we can’t believe Jed Hoyer didn’t trade
By Drew Koch
3. We can’t believe the Cubs didn’t trade Willson Contreras
Of all the moves Jed Hoyer could have made but didn’t, none is more egregious that failing to trade Willson Contreras at this year’s deadline. Did Hoyer overplay his hand? Was there not as much demand for Contreras as we all assumed? Does Chicago plan to re-sign the catcher during the offseason?
There were plenty of rumors surrounding Willson Contreras and the New York Mets to believe that the two organizations had something cooking. But it seemed like New York preferred to hang on to their top prospects rather than trade them.
Contreras is a fine player and plays a position of extreme importance. But the 30-year-old has taken a step back in terms of how many games behind the plate he suits up for. In his 93 games played this season, only 56 have come while donning the tools of ignorance. The other 37 have seen Contreras act as the Cubs designated hitter.
The Cubbies will have the opportunity to extend a qualifying offer to Willson Contreras this offseason, so if he signs elsewhere, Chicago will gain an extra draft pick. The team could also enter contract negotiations, but that seems unlikely for a player whose time behind the plate has been reduced and will eventually transition into more of a permanent DH as his career goes along.
