Braves: Max Fried gives frightening description of concussion-like symptoms

Atlanta Braves ace Max Fried was placed on the injured list with a concussion this week. His description of the events is scary to hear.

“I would say it’s unknown territory, right?” Fried said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I don’t have anything from prior experience…I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel.”

That unknown experience, as Fried went on to explain, makes this particular scenario all the more frightening.

Fried went on to describe his symptoms as “persistent headaches…just stuff like that.”

Thankfully, he will be under close supervision. But it’s the uncertainty of concussions which make it such a threat to any professional athlete’s longevity, and long-term health. Thankfully, baseball typically isn’t a hands-on, contact sport.

Fried is unfortunately one of the unlucky ones in that respect.

Braves place Max Fried on injured list

Fried was injured when a throw from Dansby Swanson bounced and hit the star pitcher in the chest. He then slipped, falling on his pitching shoulder.

While a concussion wasn’t the first thing on his mind — as it wasn’t obvious that anything made contact with Fried’s head — that is ultimately what he was diagnosed with.

Despite the concussion, Fried remained in the game and pitched six innings total. The Braves eventually lost to the rival Mets, as Fried was out-dueled by fellow ace Max Scherzer.

Atlanta called up right-handed pitcher Jay Jackson to take Fried’s spot on the roster. Jackson had a 2.13 ERA in 12 appearances for Triple-A Gwinnett.
