Jordan Montgomery is making history for the St. Louis Cardinals and making the New York Yankees look real bad.

Jordan Montgomery was never meant to get traded this season. He was performing well for the New York Yankees but in exchange for Harrison Bader, he was sent to the St. Louis Cardinals where he has already made history.

The 29-year-old has been a godsend for the ailing Cardinals rotation. Originally built with a mix of veterans, free agent signings, and some young arms, the addition of Montgomery appears to be one of the wisest decisions of all made by St. Louis.

Meanwhile, the Yankees aren’t looking so good for deciding to trade him.

Cardinals look like they already won the Jordan Montgomery trade with the Yankees

Montgomery was 3-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 21 starts for the Yankees this season. The high number of no-decisions is unusual. However, it’s difficult to say he was someone the team needed to trade.

Making this more suspicious on behalf of the Yankees, Bader is on the IL so he has yet to even play a game for them. Maybe most painful of all, the player they traded for to replace Montgomery on the roster had a terrible Yankees debut.

The Yankees added and subtracted from their rotation at this year’s trade deadline by trading Montgomery away and bringing in Frankie Montas. In his first appearance for New York, Montas lasted only 3 innings. He gave up 6 earned runs and already has fans concerned that maybe this is Sonny Gray all over again.

The Yankees are in a tailspin right now. Fortunately, their huge lead in the American League East has allowed them wiggle room for error. But with a 2-8 record in their last 10 games, it looks like the Houston Astros might be able to secure the coveted number one seed in the American League.

Over in St. Louis, the Cardinals have had the exact opposite result. They have taken over the National League Central lead from the Milwaukee Brewers. They’re 8-2 in their last 10 games with a pair of those victories coming in each of Montgomery’s starts.

Prior to this deal, the most recent Cardinals-Yankees deal was the Luke Voit for Giovanny Gallegos and Chasen Shreve swap. Only Gallegos remains and with him being a key part of the Cardinals bullpen, the Yankees may never want to make a transaction with them ever again.
