2) White Sox roster needs a Matt Foster upgrade

Matt Foster is a weak link in the White Sox bullpen and also one of the few pitchers with minor league options remaining. His mediocre season puts him in a spot where he’d be a candidate to get sent to the minors if only for Chicago to get a more well-rested arm onto the roster.

The overall bullpen has been a bit disappointing this year. Liam Hendriks hasn’t been quite where the White Sox were hoping he’d be. Kendall Graveman and Reynaldo Lopez have been good. Aside from them, Chicago hasn’t gotten much consistency out of other pitchers.

Foster is a guy who came into the year with low expectations. Coming off a year where he post a 6.00 ERA in 2021, the White Sox can consider this much more average season out of him acceptable in a lesser role.

Foster is just an arm to have around to get them through low-leverage innings. In blowouts, he’s a good candidate to eat up an inning or two. Those guys aren’t especially tough to find. By September 1, even if it’s just to get a fresher shoulder onto the team plane, we should expect Foster to be one of the guys Chicago sends down. Based on how his replacement performs, he could be back very quickly.
