Why the Yankees are already out on Carlos Correa
By Tim Boyle
Carlos Correa is likely headed back into free agency this winter but the New York Yankees won’t be one of the suitors.
Carlos Correa was supposed to sign with the New York Yankees and the New York Yankees were supposed to sign Carlos Correa. It was a done deal last offseason. Plenty of fake Twitter accounts reported it. The match felt too imperfectly perfect with the history between the two dating back to the 2017 World Series. They needed a star shortstop. He needed a lot of money.
Instead, Correa ended up on the Minnesota Twins where he’ll likely opt out after this season. The Yankees would get another shot to sign him.
Should Brian Cashman change his mind or double down on one of the main reasons why they didn’t sign him?
Anthony Volpe is the reason why the Yankees are already out on Carlos Correa
If Anthony Volpe was a sunk cost, maybe the Yankees would want to change directions. He’s anything but. Volpe is the real deal and the future shortstop in New York. He could even be in line to take over the position from Isaiah Kiner-Falefah at some point next season. In fact, he should.
It’s Volpe whom the Yankees held onto at the trade deadline rather than trade for certain players. He’s the guy they’ve hyped up yet not been willing to deal away. A young shortstop that can do a lot of things well, the Yankees are hoping he is the second-coming of Derek Jeter—or at least a very good shortstop for many years.
Correa, on the other hand, is yet another high-profile free agent they would have to spend a ton of money on. With Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton already eating up a lot of the payroll, the Yankees will need to be cautious about who gets the next mega-contract from them. If most fans had it their way, it’s Aaron Judge who should be the guy.
With Volpe in the pipeline, it just doesn’t make sense for the Yankees to go away from the plan they’ve stuck to. They already had their chance to make a big splash in free agency last winter and didn’t. At the trade deadline, they stood their ground with Volpe yet again.
The Yankees will be big players in free agency during the offseason. They should probably make a nice splash with a trade or two.
What they won’t do is sign Correa to a ridiculous amount of money. Volpe is coming. They’re committed to making it happen.
