Notre Dame football games on NBC will now be called by Jason Garrett and Jac Collinsworth.

NBC has made several big changes this offseason with their football coverage, including moving Jac Collinsworth up into the booth, where he will be joined by Jason Garrett to call Notre Dame football games.

Andrew Marchand of The New York Post reported the news on Sunday. It may be an unorthodox move to pair two men who have never worked together to call games together for the first time, but in a weird way, it kind of makes sense. Collinsworth has been with NBC for years and is a Notre Dame alum. Garrett was hired to replace an ineffective Drew Brees as part of the broadcast team.

Garrett and Collinsworth will call their first Notre Dame together when the Fighting Irish host the Marshall Thundering Herd on Sept. 10, the Golden Domers’ second game of the 2022 college season.

As expected, Collinsworth is doing the play-by-play, while Garrett is providing in-game analysis. Both Notre Dame broadcasting gigs were vacated by Brees being one-and-done with NBC, as well as Mike Tirico moving up to Sunday Night Football, where he will now do play-by-play alongside Collinsworth’s father, Cris. Tirico replaces Al Michaels, who left for Amazon this past offseason.

Although Michaels is now calling Thursday Night Football games full-time for Amazon alongside Kirk Herbstreit, he does retain a small role with NBC. While Collinsworth has worked for ESPN and NBC since graduating from college, Garrett is dipping his toes into a new venture after being the longtime Dallas Cowboys head coach and former offensive coordinator of the New York Giants.

Ultimately, we have no earthly idea how the Collinsworth-Garrett pairing will shake out. However, Collinsworth getting practice reps doing play-by-play opens up the possibility that he could call games alongside his father in due time, especially once NBC expands its college football offering beyond strictly that of Notre Dame football games. This is something to monitor at the very least.

Get ready for Collinsworth and Garrett to bring to you Irish football vs. the Thundering Herd soon.
