New York Mets manager Buck Showalter tempered the fanbase’s expectations who thought the team would call up a top prospect to replace the injured Luis Guillorme.

The New York Mets had themselves a great weekend, as they rebounded from a series-opening loss to the Philadelphia Phillies this past Friday by taking the final two games all the while shutting out their rivals. There was some bad news to come out of the series, as third baseman Luis Guillorme suffered a left groin injury on Sunday. An MRI on Monday revealed that he will be sidelined for the next four-to-six weeks, and the team subsequently placed him on the injured list.

With the news, Mets fans were openly discussing if the team would consider calling up some of their top prospects to fill in for Guillorme. One of the names brought up was No. 2 prospect Brett Baty. But manager Buck Showalter officially put a close to the possibility.

When speaking with the media on Monday, Aug. 15, Showalter ruled out Baty or No. 5 prospect Mark Vientos being activated to the major league roster.

Shortly after Guillorme’s injury on Aug. 14, Mike Puma of the New York Post tweeted that the Mets “haven’t ruled out the possibility of promoting” Baty, but noted that Vientos “was not in the discussion.” Showalter has now ruled out the possibility of either receiving a call-up at this time. So who will receive a call-up?

According to multiple reports, the Mets are calling up infielder Deven Marrero from Triple-A to take Guillorme’s spot on the roster.

Marrero signed with the team this summer and played for the Syracuse Mets upon his arrival. He was a former first-round selection by the Boston Red Sox back in 2012. He began his career with Boston (2015-2017) before having short stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2018) and Miami Marlins (2019, 2021).

In 32 games with Syracuse this season, Marrero is slashing .236/.325/.358 while recording three home runs, 17 RBI, and 25 hits.

Mets rotation has been downright unfair entering the stretch. light. More
