1. LB Jack Sanborn has been the Bears star on defense

In Chicago’s preseason opener, there was one player on defense that stood out, and it was undrafted linebacker out of Wisconsin, Jack Sanborn. Facing the Chiefs, Sanborn recorded seven total tackles, one tackle for a loss, one defended pass, and one interception.

Facing off against the Seahawks, Sanborn was all over the field both on defense and special teams. And yes, he did pick up a special teams tackle, in case any Bears fans who could not watch the game were wondering. Sanborn logged a total of seven tackles for the second game in a row.

Sanborn can make an impact on the roster, whether that is on defense or primarily on special teams. It is worth noting that he is listed as the team’s second-string linebacker entering the preseason game. That, and he was listed by PFF College as the highest-rated linebacker in zone coverage in the preseason entering Thursday.

Sanborn is worth keeping around as part of their retooling of the defense. They did move on from Khalil Mack this offseason, and there is uncertainty surrounding linebacker Roquan Smith, who requested a trade from the team this summer. Eberflus helped build up the Indianapolis Colts defense during his time with the team, and he could do the same with Chicago’s. Sanborn could benefit from staying in Chicago to further develop.
