Braves: 3 possible solutions to Marcell Ozuna saga
By John Buhler
1. Acceptance: Realize this contract is a sunk cost, cut bait entirely and move on
It stinks, but this is the most likely outcome for the Braves. Once the regular season ends and Ozuna does not make the postseason roster, look for Atlanta to eventually release him and eat that remaining $32 million. This is a sunk cost, and everyone knows it. Even if Ozuna plays nice and totally redeems himself, ownership does not want Braves Country to turn on it even one bit.
Booing Ozuna relentlessly whenever he steps into the batter’s box at Truist Park is a horrendous look. It is incredibly uncomfortable for Chip Caray, Jeff Francoeur and the guys on Bally Sports. Just imagine how terrible it is going to look on a national telecast for ESPN, FOX or TBS. Expect for Braves manager Brian Snitker to play Ozuna as little as possible for the rest of the regular season.
Once second baseman Ozzie Albies returns from his broken leg, Anthopoulos may have to swallow the bitter pill and just freaking do it. Nobody is going to blame him for making a tough decision, but he cannot think Braves fans will be cool with him trotting out there a player the fan base has begun to truly despise. This is how it will end, but does it happen this season or before the next?
If there is any good news from this potential outcome, it is that the Braves can afford to do this.
