4. Marlins manager Don Mattingly

The writing has been on the wall for Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly and things have been getting worse. Mattingly is in his seventh season managing the team and they have made the playoffs once (2020) but they have been awful in 2021 and 2022.

The club made some moves this offseason to improve their offense and they have been flat-out atrocious. The Marlins have not scored more than four runs in a game in their last 23 games, going 6-17. Entering Monday, the club was hitting .203/.273/.321 since July 29.

With the club sliding further down in the standings, it’s easy to see why Mattingly could be on the seat but that’s far from the whole story. Derek Jeter (his former teammate with the Yankees) is no longer the club’s CEO or part of the ownership group. GM Kim Ng didn’t hire Mattingly. And the topper is that Mattingly’s contract ends after this season.

So the Marlins wouldn’t even have to “fire” Mattingly, but not give him a contract extension and hire someone else, someone that would be Kim Ng’s choice to be the manager.
