Packers cornerback says team’s offense can’t hang with its defense
By John Buhler
Green Bay Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas is incredibly bullish on his team’s defense.
While it remains to be seen how good the Green Bay Packers offense will be this season, cornerback Rasul Douglas knows the defense will be even better.
With Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling leaving in free agency, the Packers’ receiving corps took a massive hit this offseason. Although Aaron Rodgers is the two-time reigning MVP, look for him to lean on the ground game a bit more than in years past as the new-look receiving corps comes together. In the meantime, we should be terrified about what this defense becomes.
"“Nah. They can’t mess with us. They can’t mess with us. Our offense — they’re not ready for us,” said Douglas with regards to if the Packers offense has tested his team’s defense yet in training camp."
As long as Rodgers is healthy, the offense will be fine. However, an improved defense in Green Bay might mean the Packers may have what it takes to get back to the Super Bowl out of a weak NFC.
While Douglas’ comment initially seemed like a jab at how bad the Packers offense might be, it actually says more about how good this defense might become. More importantly, how many teams in the NFL can realistically say they have a better offense, week in and week out, over the Packers? Now you can see clearly why 31 other teams should be terrified about the 2022 Packers.
Rasul Douglas: Green Bay Packers defense is better than its offense right now
If the Packers played in the deeper AFC, this might be a problem. Thankfully, many of the worst teams in football reside in the NFC, including the arch rival Chicago Bears, who are on a shortlist of teams who could be the very worst in the NFL this season. As far as how many teams can get to the Super Bowl out of the NFC, Green Bay has to be an undisputed top-three candidate to do so.
Pencil in the Los Angeles Rams as the favorite, as they are the defending Super Bowl champions after all. But besides the Rams, how confident do you feel about another team representing the NFC in Arizona? The Arizona Cardinals have had a tumultuous offseason. The San Francisco 49ers are going through a quarterback change. Even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had some issues…
Ultimately, it has been a bad defense that has largely kept Rodgers and company from getting back to the Super Bowl for well over a decade now. This means he will not have to carry as much of the burden as in years past. Rodgers is still in his prime, but having a defense that can help bail him out of a few bad games will go a long way towards the Packers winning the NFC this season.
With the offense being Matt LaFleur’s side of the ball, expect for improvement to happen there.
