Mikal Bridges’ cryptic Tweets have us thinking about a Kevin Durant-Phoenix Suns trade.

On Monday, the talk of the NBA world surrounded Kevin Durant after Shams Charania of The Athletic dropped a column with updates on virtually every team who has shown even a modicum of interest (subscription required) in trading for the Brooklyn Nets star.

There were some surprises among the seven teams mentioned — which we ranked in terms of likelihood to trade for Durant — but there from the start have been the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix has made quality moves to upgrade its roster over the last several seasons with a Western Conference Finals win to show for it in 2021.

Mikal Bridges is believed to be the centerpiece of what the Suns have offered along with a collection of first-round draft picks, but the deal has little momentum with the Nets.

Shortly after the article connecting Bridges to a Durant trade, he turned to Twitter with some cryptic Tweets that you have to assume are about the topic everyone else in the NBA world was also talking about on Monday.

While it doesn’t give us any substantial extra insider information, it’s always neat to see a player react to rumors and news in the same way we do as fans, especially when they’re directly involved.

It sure seems like Bridges could use the trade rumors as motivation one way or another. On one hand, it seems as though the Nets aren’t interested in Bridges. On the other hand, his current team — who he is poised to start the season with barring a trade before training camp — is actively bringing him up in trade talks.

That has to make you feel a certain type of way as a player.

Bridges, who was traded on the first night of his NBA career, needs to understand these discussions are just a product of the business and not personal, but this is internal bulletin board material for motivated players.

The 2022 season was a strong one for Bridges, who made the All-Defensive team while averaging 14.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. He had an iron man year as well appearing in all 82 games.

We’ll see how these talks motivate him to take it a step further in the 2022-23 season.
