Chiefs veterans who could be cut: Josh Gordon

As much as we all want Gordon to succeed, given everything he’s dealt with off the field, it might be unrealistic to assume that success will come in Kansas City.

This offseason, the Chiefs did lose Tyreek Hill, but they replaced him in bulk. That pushed Gordon to the back end of the wide receiver depth chart. There’s only so many favors he can pull with Andy Reid.

Training camp struggles haven’t helped matters for the former Pro Bowler. He’s not the player he once was, and while he can probably help some teams if his head’s on straight, the Chiefs aren’t one of them.

Reid continues to say all the right things about Gordon, praising his positive mentality. But he’s spent too much time with the two’s and three’s to give us much confidence. Nate Taylor of The Athletic seems to agree:

"“For a six-year veteran, Gordon has had too many mental lapses in camp. Gordon has had drops in the individual and team periods. In Saturday’s practice, Gordon flashed his speed on a long completion from Mahomes, but too often, Gordon’s reps have been with the second- or third-team offense. The Chiefs don’t appear to have a role on special teams for Gordon, and Mahomes has built a strong connection with Watson.”"

Given the young weapons at Mahomes’ disposal, Gordon could be on the way out by Week 1.

Next. Jackson Mahomes is loudly back at Chiefs games, for better or worse. dark
