Cubs position player robbed Albert Pujols of HR chance while pitching

Designated hitter Franmil Reyes was called upon to pitch for the Chicago Cubs, and he cost Albert Pujols a shot at hitting another home run.

Albert Pujols is the talk of MLB, and for good reason. He has been on fire through the month of August, and is getting that much closer to recording his 700th career home run. The St. Louis Cardinals have been much-watch more than ever due to the hot streak of Pujols.

During one of the Cardinals’ second game of a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs, Pujols stepped into the batter’s box with a chance to hit home run No. 694. The Cubs had designated hitter Franmil Reyes pitching the final inning, and he plunked Pujols.

The Cardinals were up 12-3 at that point in the game. Reyes entered the game, and his first batter faced was Pujols. Reyes’ third pitch of the at-bat went wide and hit Pujols, forcing him to take first base.

Reyes surrendered one run in the inning after Paul Goldschmidt grounded into a double play and allowed Dylan Carlson to score. He then struck out Paul DeJong to end the inning.

Pujols has made history in this past week.

On Aug. 20 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, he hit career homers No. 691 and 692, and in the process, passed Stan Musial for the second-most total bases in MLB history.

Then, on Monday, he hit home run No. 693 at the expense of the Cubs. That was Pujols’ seventh home run in a 10 game stretch, making him the oldest to accomplish that feat, passing Ted Williams, who did so at the age of 41 in 1960.

It may not have happened on Tuesday night, but based off how Pujols has been playing this month, it will only be a matter time before he hits his 694th homer.
