Mets: 3 trade deadline moves New York is lucky they didn’t make
2) Trade for C.J. Cron
When the Mets were interested in Josh Bell, the same report indicated that they were also interested in Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron. Unlike Bell, Cron was an All-Star.
Entering the All-Star break, he was hitting .298/.350/.552 with 21 home runs and 69 RBI. That would have put Cron on a 162-game pace for 38 home runs and 124 RBI. Since the All-Star break (entering Tuesday), Cron has hit .171/.230/.295 with two home runs and 11 RBI.
The Rockies were the only team in the sport that did not make a single trade at the trade deadline. They are hoping that Cron will rebound to his first half ways as they signed him to a two-year extension before the start of this year, but Cron’s value likely won’t ever be higher. The Mets, as a result, would have had to pay a premium for him despite having a rough month.
Now, the Rockies are having to play musical chairs with Cron, Connor Joe, and prospect Elehuris Montero (who was the centerpiece of the Nolan Arenado trade) at first base, Ryan McMahon and Montero at third, and Charlie Blackmon, Cron, Joe, and Montero at DH. Blackmon and Joe can each play the outfield, but trading Cron would have given them the opportunity to see Montero play every day at first base, which is his best defensive position.
