The Kansas City Chiefs lost a legend on Wednesday morning in former quarterback and broadcaster Len Dawson. Patrick Mahomes paid tribute.

From one great quarterback to another, respect was flowing in Kansas City on Wednesday morning.

Following the sad news of former Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson passing away at 87 years old, the kind words from around the football world began pouring in. None kinder than from current Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes.

Dawson, a Hall of Famer, played 18 pro seasons and racked up three American Football League title, a victory in Super Bowl IV, MVP honors in that game, seven Pro Bowls and two All-Pro selections.

In 1969, Dawson led Kansas City to its aforementioned first Super Bowl win, the triumph over the Minnesota Vikings. Dawson and the Chiefs were two-touchdown underdogs but Kansas City won going away, 23-7, with Dawson throwing for 142 yards and a score, while completing 70.6 percent of his throws at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans.

However, for many, the thoughts of Dawson upon news of his death weren’t about what he accomplished on the field, but more importantly, who he was as a person. Rightfully so.

After a tremendous football career, Dawson ventured into the world of broadcasting and became a staple in millions of homes, working as an analyst for HBO on Inside The NFL. Dawson also worked as a color commentator for Chiefs radio broadcasts, serving with the team from 1985-2017.

Dawson is easily the most recognizable face, and voice, in Kansas City sports. It’ll be quite some time before that changes.
