Toasty Buns: 5 college football coaches on hot seat entering 2022
By Scott Rogust
3. Herm Edwards, Arizona State
Herm Edwards was last a head coach back in 2008 as the sideline boss for the Kansas City Chiefs. After spending nearly a decade with ESPN, Edwards made his return to coaching, this time in college football. In 2017, he was hired to lead the Arizona State Sun Devils, his first coaching job at the collegiate level since he was the defensive backs coach for San Jose State back in 1989.
Since arriving at Arizona State, Edwards brought his team to eight wins at most. In fact, they were ranked inside the AP Top 25 in three of his four years, including a high of No. 17 in 2019. Edwards made it to a bowl game three times as well, with his lone win coming in the Sun Bowl in 2019.
Edwards’ program, however, is under fire. The NCAA is still investigating the program for alleged recruiting violations during college football’s recruiting dead period during the COVID-19 pandemic. Five assistants on Edwards’ staff have left the program since the investigation began.
Entering his fifth season, Edwards has yet to lead the Sun Devils to a division title, let alone a Pac-12 Championship. If things do not turn around, Edwards could be out.
