Will Grier, QB

The other quarterback the Cowboys released on Tuesday was Will Grier, who “impressed this summer with his downfield aggressiveness and athleticism”, according to Michael Gehlken of Dallas Morning News.

While the Cowboys are expected to bring either Grier or Rush back, the current roster leaves Prescott in a vulnerable position.

“If Prescott were to suffer a minor injury, the Cowboys removed any luxury of caution they may have had if they enter a game with their current roster makeup,” writes FanSided’s Josh Wilson.

Grier was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2019, but he only remained in Charlotte for two years. Last August, the former third-round pick was released by the team. The Cowboys claimed Grier off waivers the very next day.

Grier is still developing in the league, and Gehlken described him as having a “strong training camp” despite dealing with a groin issue.

As long as Prescott remains healthy, there’s no issue for there to only be one, but Prescott even proved in 2020 how precarious his position can be when subjected to brutal hits. Missing Tyron Smith only makes him more vulnerable, so while the Cowboys wanted the QB2 spot for someone else, it’s an unusual strategy in a league that often carries insurance at every position.
