Yankees call up top shortstop prospect with rosters expanding

With MLB rosters expanding for the month of September, the New York Yankees called up one of their top shortstop prospects.

The New York Yankees‘ second half ot the 2022 season has been a far cry from their dominant first half. Recently, the team failed to pick up series wins against the Oakland Athletics or Los Angeles Angels in the past week, two teams in the bottom of the AL West standings. Now that the season has entered the month of September, roster officially expand. That gave the team the opportunity to call up a  prospect that fans have been clamoring for for quite some time.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post was first to break the news that the Yankees were calling up third-ranked prospect and shortstop Oswald Peraza from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

Given that Peraza is not just the team’s third-best prospect in their farm system, but also ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 53 overall prospect in all of baseball, he should factor into the starting lineup at some point for the Yankees in the final month of the regular-season. But, the team does have Isiah Kiner-Falefa already manning shortstop. What exactly will happen?

On Friday, Sept. 2, manager Aaron Boone revealed that Isiah Kiner-Falefa is still the team’s starting shortstop, but said that Peraza could receive some opportunities, even hinting that he may be in their lineup for their Sept. 3 game against the Tampa Bay Rays. That all comes via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.

Peraza spent the entirety of this season playing for the Rail Riders, where he did have a rough start at the plate in the months of April and May. But he has rebounded ever since. In 99 games, Peraza recorded a .259 batting average, a .329 on-base percentage, a .488 slugging percentage, 19 home runs, 50 RBI, 57 runs scored, and 100 hits.

Can Peraza be part of the solution to get the team out of their second-half slump? Whenever Peraza get his opportunity to play, Yankees fans will no doubt be watching with anticipation.
