Gunther vs. Sheamus for the Intercontinental Championship provided fans with a true match of the year candidate at WWE Clash at the Castle 2022.
After winning a five-way match to become the No. 1 contender for the Intercontinental Championship, that meant he would have to battle Gunther, a wrestler who has had countless match of the year candidates during his time in NXT UK. Gunther and Sheamus matched up perfectly on paper, as they are both hard-hitting stars.
And it was a banger of a bout in Cardiff, Wales.
In a match that featured a powerbomb onto steel steps, a Celtic Cross off the top rope, and many, MANY chops to the chest, Gunther retained his Intercontinental Championship over Sheamus. The fans were on their feet inside Principality Stadium countless times.

In the final portion of the match, Sheamus hit the aforementioned Celtic Cross to Gunther off the top rope, but only got a two-count. “The Celtic Warrior” tried to go for the Brogue Kick, but his back gave out on him, due to the number of powerbombs given to him by Gunther. The champion then hit a vicious clothesline to get the three-count and retain.
As Gunther walked up the ramp, Sheamus got up off of the mat and received a standing ovation from the fans.
