Edwin De Los Santos upsets Jose Valenzuela by round 3 KO (video)

Jose Valenzuela dropped his first boxing loss to Edwin De Los Santos. Valenzuela was the favorite but De Los Santos proved to be too much. 

Jose Valenzuela was expected to notch another victory in his lightweight boxing campaign on Sept. 4, but Edwin De Los Santos flipped the script and handed Valenzuela his first career loss.

Valenzuela (12-1, 8 KOs) entered the Crypto.com Arena in L.A. with all the momentum on his side. The 23-year-old from Renton, Washington, was riding a two-fight KO streak against Austin Dulay and former champion Francisco Vargas, but he ran into a wall in De Los Santos.

De Los Santos (15-1, 14 KOs) came into his bout with Valenzuela with one loss on his record, but he also had a high KO percentage. The 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic made the most of his opportunity in the pay-per-view portion of the Andy Ruiz vs. Luis Ortiz undercard.

De Los Santos was tunning Valenzuela up in round two but got caught by a Valenzuela left hand and stumbled to the canvas. Valenzuela thought the tide had shifted in his favor, but he was wrong.

Moments later De Los Santos tagged Valenzuela back with a series of punches, which made Valenzuela fold to the canvas. De Los Santos was too aggressive though, and hit Valenzuela when he was down.

De Los Santos was deducted a point, and the round ended.

In round 3, De Los Santos put Valenzuela down for a second time. Valenzuela returned to his feet but went limp momentarily when De Los Santos connected with another straight left. The referee saw enough and called a stop to the fight giving De Los Santos the round 3 KO.

It was a surprising finish, but consider it a coming-out party for De Los Santos, who is sure to snag another big fight after his performance against Valenzuela.
