Yankees: Aaron Boone gives concerning update on latest IL addition

One of the New York Yankees’ trade deadline acquisitions is now sidelined with an injury that requires surgery.

The New York Yankees are in the midst of a slump that has caused their lead in the AL East to diminish to a handful of games. One of the reasons is that they struggle to get hits and knock in runs. To make matters worse, one of their best hitters is now sidelined.

After the Yankees picked up a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, Sept. 4, manager Aaron Boone revealed that outfielder Andrew Benintendi has broken the hook of his hamate bone, and will require surgery.

What is important to note is that there is no definitive timetable for how long Benintendi will be sidelined, but Boone said he is hopeful that it will not knock him out for the remainder of the season.

When Benintendi spoke with the media, he said he will speak with doctors on Monday. He also revealed that he dealt with a similar injury back in college. You can listen to his full comments below, courtesy of YES Network.

The injury occurred during the third inning of the Yankees-Rays game on Sept. 2, when Benintendi took a swing at a pitch. He was ruled out for the remainder of that game, and was placed on the injured list on Sept. 3 with what was then described as right wrist inflammation.

Looking to bolster their team, the Yankees pulled off a deal with the Kansas City Royals to acquire Benintendi in exchange for prospect pitchers TJ Sikkema, Beck Way, and Chandler Champlain.

Since arriving in New York, Benintendi recorded a .254 batting average, a .331 on-base percentage, a .404 slugging percentage, two home runs, 12 RBI, 14 runs scored, and 29 hits.

The Yankees will obviously hope that Benintendi will be able to return at some point this season. But as of now, there is no firm idea of how much time he will miss post-surgery.
