Brian Kelly thought he could get snippy with the LSU media but one reporter put him in his place in the most brutal way possible.

After losing his first game in charge of LSU football, you’d think Brian Kelly would be humbled during his media appearances this week.

You would be incorrect.

Kelly’s Tuesday media availability turned snippy when the head coach chastised reporters for being tardy. He tried to joke about collecting $10 for being late and putting it towards a party at the end of the season at his house, but his delivery was stilted and it didn’t really hit.

Instead, a reporter got the last laugh by delivering a devastating line: “Maybe if you win I’d be on time.”

Kelly is lucky the media room didn’t erupt in a giant, playground-esque, “Ooooooooooooooooo.”

Get that man some burn cream. He’s going to need it for days after this.

The quip gets to something else that Kelly hasn’t necessarily had to deal with before. He was extremely comfortable at Notre Dame. The Irish even gave him another chance after a 4-8 failure in 2016.

Things are different at LSU, where a head coach who won a national title in 2019 was fired just two seasons later.

The media won’t go easy on him. There will be no honeymoon period.

The Tigers lost on Sunday night to Florida State in a game that was full of sloppy play and questionable decision-making. Losing would have been bad enough. Losing like that made it so much worse.

Kelly has had one offseason to put his stamp on the program, so he can argue that he needs more time to clean up the mess his predecessor left. That may be true but he’s going to keep being the butt of jokes if he doesn’t get things moving soon.
