Scott Frost just sealed his fate losing at home to Clay Helton, Georgia Southern

Scott Frost’s seat just got hotter, as the Nebraska Cornhuskers suffered yet another heartbreaking loss this season, this time to the Georgia Southern Eagles. 

Entering the 2022 season, there was no coach whose seat was hotter than Scott Frost’s, who had not finished a campaign with a winning record in each of his first four years as head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Things got off to a rough start in Week 0, as Nebraska lost 31-28 to the Northwestern Wildcats in Dublin, Ireland. But, the Cornhuskers were able to earn a 38-17 win over North Dakota Fighting Hawks in their home opener.

Frost led Nebraska back home to coach against the Georgia Southern Eagles, led by former USC Trojans head coach Clay Helton. Despite the team taking a late 42-38 lead, the Cornhuskers lost 45-42 to drop to 1-2 on the season.

The Cornhuskers were able to take the aforementioned lead after a one-yard touchdown run by Casey Thompson to wrap up a 15-play drive. Even with the lead late, Nebraska’s defense could not hold back Georgia Southern. The Eagles were able to march down the field on 11-plays, with quarterback Kyle Vantrease running nine yards into the end zone to take the late 45-42 lead with 36-seconds remaining in regulation.

There was hope for Nebraska fans, as the offense led by Thompson was able to get the team into field goal range. The problem was that kicker Timmy Bleekrode shanked his 52-yard field goal attempt left of the goalposts, clinching the victory for Helton’s team..

This is yet another close game that did not go Frost’s way. In fact, as Pete Thamel of ESPN points out, this is now the 10th straight one-score game that Frost has lost.

Frost was brought in to bring Nebraska back to its winning ways. He had success in two years with the UCF Knights, with his highlight being a 13-0 2017 season. But since joining Nebraska, the team has never finished with a winning record. In fact, the Cornhuskers were ranked in the AP Top 25 once in his tenure, and that was No. 24 in 2019, per College Football Reference.

Make no mistake about it, Frost’s time with Nebraska is ticking away with each loss, especially with a reduction in his contract buyout hitting after Oct. 1, 2022.
