Wisconsin Badgers kicker Vito Calvaruso just missed out on a go-ahead field goal against the Washington State Cougars.

The Wisconsin Badgers started off their season with a 38-0 victory over the Illinois State Cardinals. Now, they returned home to host the Washington State Cougars, looking to start off their 2022 campaign with a 2-0 record.

In college football, kicks are not as much of a given as those in the NFL. Simply put, they can go great, or go terribly wrong. With over three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Wisconsin kicker Vito Calvaruso attempted a 51-yard field goal to give them a 3-0 lead. Instead, the kick sailed just a bit outside.

Wisconsin go-ahead field goal attempt sails wide right

Like Bob Uecker famously said in the film Major League, this kick was “juuuuuust a bit outside.”

The Cougars were able to take the lead first, after a 13-play drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Nakia Watson. But, the Badgers were able to respond on the following drive, as quarterback Graham Mertz connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass to Clay Cundiff.

Then, just before halftime, Mertz connected with Cundiff once again, this time on a 10-yard touchdown pass to give them a 14-7 lead.

The field goal attempt may have been missed by a wide margin, but it did not sink the Badgers, as they led entering halftime.
