Quinn Ewers injury update: Texas gets unfortunate news on QB

Quinn Ewers went down after a hard hit in Texas’ close loss to Alabama and now the Longhorns have a concerning update on the star quarterback.

The Texas Longhorns nearly knocked off Alabama in Week 2, losing by one point in a game during which they missed a field goal and failed to convert some other good opportunities. But even more impressive is that they almost pulled out a huge upset with Quinn Ewers missing more than half of the game.

Right at the end of the first quarter, Ewers had Texas in the red zone and tried to make a play in the face of pressure. He was driven into the ground by a big hit after his throw and stayed on the turf for quite some time before walking off but not returning to the game. Ewers was later seen on the sidelines with his arm in a sling.

After the game, the injury was referred to as a clavicle sprain and many believed that meant he avoided something quite serious. With confirmation on Sunday, though, the news got rough for the Longhorns as it was revealed he suffered an SC sprain (an injury where the clavicle meets the sternum) and will be out 4-6 weeks with his recovery.

This is a significant blow to Texas moving forward this season.

For as well as backup Hudson Card held his own once he entered the game, the argument could be made from one quarter of play that the Longhorns win that game if Ewers is still under center. He was dynamic in dissecting the Crimson Tide defense, throwing for 134 yards on 9-of-12 passing before exiting with the injury.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that Ewers will return this season and that Card more than held his own upon entering the game. However, with matchups at Oklahoma and at Oklahoma State over the next six weeks, Texas’ chances of winning the Big 12 certainly hang in the balance over the span of time Ewers is expected to miss.

We shall see if Card can replicate his performance against Alabama and how quickly Quinn Ewers can recover. But as of now, this is a tough blow for the Longhorns after such a promising performance.
