Genesis Cabrera is on the outs for the Cardinals roster

Genesis Cabrera has struggled incredibly this season for the Cardinals. In 39 games for St. Louis, he was 4-2 with one save, 13 holds and a blown save. He gave up 23 earned runs in his outings with the Cardinals.

Tensions have been high for Cabrera and the Cardinals. There was an incident before the All-Star break in which he was visibly frustrated at being removed from the game, seemingly tossing the ball at manager Oli Marmol. The incident led to Albert Pujols talking to Cabrera in the dugout, letting him know that his actions were wrong, that he shouldn’t act that way, and should apologize to Marmol and his teammates.

Since then, he was sparingly used, and on Aug. 27, he was optioned to Memphis. Cabrera is 0-1 in three games for Memphis, including a blown save. He’s thrown 5 innings and has a 5.40 ERA.

The Cardinals have plenty of options out of the bullpen and should not have to bring back Cabrera. He does have the potential to be a key weapon out of the bullpen once he learns to channel his emotions and pitch with some consistency. It doesn’t seem the Cardinals will have that from Cabrera this season. He should take the remainder of this season and the offseason to improve and be an asset to the team in his first arbitration-eligible season.
