3 ideal Nebraska coaching hires to drag Huskers out of Scott Frost’s mess
By John Buhler
Urban Meyer is a three-time national championship-winning head football coach
How desperate are Nebraska football fans? Do we really want to go there? Of course, we do! Despite it going to hell in a hand basket in Jacksonville, Urban Meyer is an outstanding college head coach. He might retire on you in a moment’s notice, but he can recruit, build up a program and win prolifically right away. Meyer has won at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State.
This is the one hire Nebraska could make that would really move the needle. Everyone’s attention would be piqued. However, he is largely persona non grata in the sport for a reason. Meyer may have a cushy desk job as part of FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff, but we have to wonder if he has that urge to be a head coach at a major program again. Nebraska may be desperate enough to hire him, too.
This all comes down to how badly Nebraska football fans want to experience winning big again.
Matt Campbell has a great thing going in Ames, but we wonder if he would walk
Admittedly, it is going to take an awful lot to pry Matt Campbell out of Ames. The Iowa State head coach can win seven or eight games every year in perpetuity and he will have a statue erected in his honor. The big question is does he want to be Iowa State’s Bill Snyder? If not, then Nebraska might be the perfect job to get him to leave after seven years in the Big 12. He did leave Toledo…
Iowa State seems to have a great thing going from an athletic department perspective. Guys want to play for him and the Clones are regularly competing among the very best teams in their Power Five conference. Of course, he has to wonder if he can get back to the conference title bout or win a New Year’s Six bowl again. Back in the day, Nebraska was synonymous with the Orange Bowl.
Campbell is the best combination of a proven and active head coach who could leave for Nebraska.
